What are the advantages and disadvantages of using MailChimp?

Like any application or website in the World Wide Web, MailChimp comes with its pros and cons as well.

Pros:

  • Thorough reporting – it shows everything you need to know including clients, geo-tracking, social media and Google Analytics integration.
  • Generous freemium plan – their free plan has most of the tools available and you’re allowed 10,000 emails to 2,000 of your subscribers, which is a good deal.
  • Great template editor – MailChimp has a neat interface and a simple, but powerful editor.

Cons:

  • High-cost subscription plans – while they do offer a generous freemium plan, the prices get steep pretty quick once you start needing to increase your email, or subscribers.
  • Automated emails are hard to manage – they have no workflow editor and it’s not easy to set up
  • Customer support – you need to pay before you can use their live support, I have never seen this kind of strategy before but it’s a big no-no for me.

Happy reviews from MailChimp users

“Mailchimp is simple, really powerful and super simple to use. Creating newsletters used to be something I dreaded. Since using Mailchimp I really don’t mind it. Best of all they have a free account which is perfect fot most small businesses.” – Alan

The learning curve for me was very straight forward. I have been able to record improved conversions from my marketing emails due to the high customization of email prepared with this software.”- Deba

Working for a non-profit and having a very targeted base of individuals that I am trying to communicate with can be cumbersome and frustrating because that target group is very segmented by demographics. Mailchimp allows me to modify how I communicate with these segments, without having to reinvent the wheel and send separate campaigns to each segment. I can easily create one campaign and then segment from within to make sure I am communicating correctly to each group.” – Brandon Green

Mailchimp is a wonderful email campaign platform. We are currently utilizing the free version, going on 5 years now, for our bimonthly newsletters and have never run into a single issue. As a marketer, my favorite thing about Mailchimp is the ability to share our newsletters and subscribe links via social media. You can also create pop-ups or static forms to embed on your website so that when people subscribe they are automatically added to your subscriber list.” – Virginia Brooks

Mail-chimp combines advance features with fun & utility to present a wonderful mailing tool. There is no doubt that it is the best in the market and rightly so! I have tried using other mailing software; a non-tech person like me gets stuck with the UI at the very outset. Mail-Chimp is a piece of cake!!” – Aanchal

MailChimp is a great way to introduce users to marketing automation without a high level of risk. Competitors have steep pricing structures that tend to not allow smaller websites with limited budgets test out their features like MailChimp does. It is amazingly easy to setup and use and it has also become my brand of choice for marketing automation across my websites. MailChimp has amazing integrations with many platforms and are easy to use and setup with little or no development experience.” – Miguel

Final Thoughts

MailChimp is a good email marketing tool for most users, with its ease of use and range of features, as well as their free plans. Keep in mind, though, that their subscription plans are more expensive compared to other newsletter tools.

There are a lot of integrations available for MailChimp, which could be due to the number of active users they have. That combined with relatively powerful tools (available on the higher tier plans) really do add up to a great tool.

If you’re a business with specific needs, like powerful marketing automation, or use of your own tracking-domain, then you may need to look for another tool to satisfy those needs. But all in all, there really is a lot to like from MailChimp.
